FAQs Trainees
What does a Training Contract cover?
A Training Contract lasts for 2 years and usually covers 4 different ‘seats'. Seats are periods of time (normally 6 months) spent in a team learning the business and applying skills in a real way. Trainees are required to spend at least one seat in a contentious and non-contentious area of law. The Trainee has a supervisor in each seat who is a qualified Solicitor with significant experience in the work area. The supervisor will be responsible for delegating and overseeing the work that the Trainee is asked to deal with. This hands-on process helps to develop and enhance the skills required of a Trainee to qualify as a Solicitor and also assists the Trainee in deciding upon the area of the law in which they would like to practice when they qualify.
What sort of Trainees are you looking for?
Stones are always looking for people with that something ‘special' about them. We look for Trainees who have drive, a ‘can do' attitude, a level of inquisitiveness that can be developed to make thorough practitioners, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
How many Trainees do you recruit each year?
Stones usually recruit two Trainees each year after selection at a competitive Assessment Day and call back interviews that are held in February or March of the year preceding the start of the contract.
Do you have a closing date for Applications?
We have a closing date which is set for each year. Please look on the Trainee page for the relevant dates for the next year's intake.
How do I apply?
Go to the Trainee page and follow the instructions given. If you have any queries please feel free to contact the Human Resources Department on 01392 666872.
How many Trainees do you keep after qualification?
This depends on both the Trainees progress and on the business needs of the Firm at the time of qualification. We discuss opportunities with Trainees on an ongoing basis during the course of their Training Contract.
What qualifications do I need to apply for a Training Contract?
We welcome applications from candidates who have a strong academic background and have obtained at least a 2:1 degree in either a law or non-law related subject. In exceptional circumstances we may consider applicants with a 2:2. All applicants must be about to undertake, or have completed with a minimum of a pass, the Legal Practice Course.
