Education

Education looms large in all our lives, we will have spent at least half - if not a great deal more - of our childhood, teenage years and beyond in school, college or university.

In most cases we can look back at our own education or our childrens’ past or present education with a degree of satisfaction. Alas it is not always the case and sometimes things go wrong. Nowadays the Law can often help to address those wrongs.

Recently a lady in Wales who suffered years of bullying at primary school has been awarded £20,000 compensation by her Local Education Authority in a landmark case. It cannot be appealed because the matter was settled by consent at the door of the court.

In 1998 Monica Phelps won a landmark case in the House of Lords. She was awarded over £40,000 in damages when it was determined that an Educational Psychologist brought in by her school to consider her learning difficulties had failed to identify and thus take steps to deal with her dyslexia.

Nowadays problems arising from school attendance are many and various:

  • Admission Arrangements
  • Suspensions
  • Exclusions
  • Religious beliefs
  • Dress Code
  • Transport
  • Discrimination
  • Bullying
  • Special Needs
  • School Reorganisation

Do you personally have matters relating to schooling which you are concerned about or do you know others who might? If the answer is ‘Yes’, then Stones is able to offer advice on all Education Law matters.
